Abstract
ackground : Since initial treatment for complete heart block with external transvenous pacemaker by Zoll in 1952, the frequency of the use for cardic pacing has increased
considerably and the indications for long term pacing have greatly extended according to the
development of smaller and multiprogrammable pacemakers. Complications rslated to cardic
pacemaker have also been diversified.
Method : To examine complications related to them, we studied 59 implantations of
permanent pacemaker from January 1986 to October 1992 at National Medical Center.
Results : In this study we experienced 16 cases (27.1%) of complications for cardiac
pacing in 59 implantations of permenent pacemaker. They included two cases (12.5%) of
pacing failure, two cases (12.5%) of undersensing of wide QRS wave, one case (6.3%) of
undersensing of APC, one case (6.3%) of dislodgement, three cases (18.8%) of oversensing,
two cases (12.5%) of pacemaker induced CHF, three cases (18.8%) of competition and two
cases (12.5%) of wound infection.
Conclusion : With more frquent use of permanent pacemaker, it is thought that the
development of ideal pacemaker is required.
